Searching for Entry-Level Marketing Jobs.

Here are a few pointers to help you work to secure an entry-level marketing position.

  • Share your portfolio and work experiences on social media, keep it updated, be creative, and engage with those that acknowledge your work.

Get your blog/portfolio link up in your social media bios, add your videos, or podcasts into the mix and allow potential employers to find you by using relevant hashtags, or tagging them. Give potential employers a reason to follow you and engage with you. Note: portfolios are so important!

  • Use LinkedIn and Twitter to actively search for jobs.

Use hashtags that match up with your expertise, skills, and knowledge and engage with those posts that are of interest to you. With LinkedIn, you can search its jobs section which is packed with lots of opportunities and allows for you to make an easy application – just make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date!

  • Engage on social media, get stuck into discussions and debates on the subjects you care about.

Yes, this is time-consuming but it will pay off if you put the work in now. We suggest that you jump onto LinkedIn, follow companies that interest you, and join in with discussions on their timeline – this is your opportunity to show off your knowledge and impress. Also, post your own articles or thoughts on industry developments – show an ongoing interest, relevance, and expertise.

  • Build a personality online, a brand!

It is hard to strike a balance with your professional and personal life on social media, especially when you are developing a personality angled at becoming an authority in your niche. Try to balance your social feeds with humour, and personality – don’t become one-dimensional. Businesses like to see the person behind the ideas, they want a glimpse of the whole package before they meet you face-to-face.

  • Build up your network, then meet for a coffee.

Of course, the benefits of using social media for your entry-level job are there to be seen for all, but meeting up with those you have connected with can make a lasting impression and strengthen the relationship further. So, keep engaging online, help each other out then get your calendars loaded up and start booking in people for coffee meet-ups!

  • Stay up to date with your industry knowledge.

Staying up to date with industry knowledge is essential, especially as a marketer so we recommend you sign up to various industry-leading blogs that can help you do just that (you can visit our blog post which complements this podcast that has links to a number of these blogs).

With your newly found knowledge, you can then tweet your views and opinions on what you’ve learned or write a small piece on LinkedIn and share your thoughts there. Also, by having more information in your pocket about various industry developments, you can join in more specific conversations and group discussions, which leads us nicely to our final tip.

  • Join active online groups.

As I’ve just mentioned, joining online groups and forums are a great way to bring more opportunities to your doorstep. There is plenty on Twitter, and of course, LinkedIn.

Get involved in the conversations, share relevant, useful information with the group and slowly build up your reputation as an authoritative voice – but have patience – this will take more time than the others, but it will be worth it as people in the group will eventually refer you to other members  – a great way to expand your network and another tactic to add to your entry-level job hunt strategy.
